Editor’s Notes

7 months until ANA in Chicago. If you are interested in exhibiting or speaking at the ANA convention in Rosemont August 13-17, the ANA website has the necessary application forms; just follow EVENTS → CONVENTION EXHIBITS. The application deadline for exhibiting in Rosemont is June 15.

The ANA website also has information about exhibiting at their late-March National Money Show in Pittsburgh — but act quickly because the application deadline for exhibiting at the NMS is January 18.

Minutes of the 1199th Meeting

The 1199th meeting of the Chicago Coin Club was the Annual Banquet and held Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at the Grand Lux Café, 111 E. Ontario, Downtown Chicago. President Richard Lipman called the meeting to order at 7 PM with attendance of 42 members and guests. Adding to the festive atmosphere Jeffrey Rosinia scattered foil-wrapped chocolate coins across the banquet tables and Richard Lipman set out at each place setting a 500 intis banknote issued by the Central Reserve Bank of Peru in 1987.

Following an invocation by Richard Hamilton, President Lipman thanked the banquet committee Sharon Blocker and Richard Hamilton, sponsors Bill Burd and the Blockers for the appetizers, and Steve Zitowsky, Treasurer, and Carl Wolf, Secretary, for their logistical work.

A motion was passed to conduct an abbreviated agenda. President Lipman reminded everyone the next meeting on January 9, 2019 will be the 1200th meeting, or 100 years of monthly coin club meetings! Bill Burd spoke briefly of the activities planned for the milestone occasion. Mark Wieclaw spoke of the fundraising program to celebrate the 100th year and the Century Club lapel pin for donations of $100 or more.

President Lipman announced the members and offices put up by the nomination committee to serve 2019-2020: President - Richard Lipman; First Vice President - Lyle Daly; Second Vice President - John Riley; Archivist - William Burd; Directors: Melissa Gumm, Dale Lukanich, Mark Wieclaw, and Deven Kane. Appointed positions include: Immediate Past President - Elliott Krieter; Chatter Editor - Paul Hybert; Secretary - Carl Wolf; Treasurer - Steve Zitowsky; and ANA Club Representative - Jeffrey Rosinia. A motion was unanimously passed accepting the slate. Past President Robert Leonard swore in the new officers.

The membership applications of Andrew Keller and Jack Smith received second reading and a motion was passed accepting them into membership. The secretary announced that member Brett Irick would become a Numismatic Ambassador at the upcoming convention of Florida United Numismatists. Brett also is a recipient of the Marquis Who’s Who Lifetime Achievement Award.

Second Vice President John Riley presented 2018 Cabeen Exhibit Award recipients with engraved Club medals suspended on neck ribbons: First Place - Deven Kane; Second Place - Mark Wieclaw; Honorable Mention - Lyle Daly, Robert Leonard, and Richard Lipman.

Lyle Daly introduced the featured speaker, William Bierly, who spoke on How and When the Motto IN GOD WE TRUST Began to Appear on U.S. Coinage. Following a question and answer period, Lyle presented Bill with an ANA Education Certificate and an engraved Club medal suspended on a neck ribbon. Member Tom Uram put in the mail a door prize donation of two medals struck by the Pennsylvania Association of Numismatists “Honoring 150 Years of Our Nation’s Motto IN GOD WE TRUST.” When the medals arrive, Bill will mail them to the door prize winners Sharon Blocker and James Taylor.

When the meeting was adjourned at 9:17 PM, Jeff Rosinia delivered a trumpet serenade of the holiday tune Jingle Bells.

Respectfully Submitted,
Carl F. Wolf, Secretary

Minutes of the 100th Anniversary Committee Meeting (#5)

November 28, 2018

The fifth meeting of the 100th Anniversary Planning Committee was called to order at 6:23pm by chairperson, Mark Wieclaw. In attendance were Bill Burd, Jeff Rosinia, Melissa Gumm, Dale Carlson, Sharon Blocker, Steve Zitowski, and Scott McGowan.

Banquet: We are still waiting for a new contract with Gibsons Steakhouse for August 13, 2019. It was decided by the committee not to wait to see if the room at the Double Tree hotel would become available.

Melissa G. and Bill B. are working on the banquet booklet/program. It was decided that a spiral version similar to the club’s 90th Anniversary booklet. Ivory with black print was chosen.

Melissa G. is working on a Goodie Bag and Jeff R. is looking into having 1919 dated coins encapsulated as giveaways.

Name tags and various ribbons were discussed for use at the banquet along with boutonnieres for past presidents.

Jeff Rosinia was asked to act as Master of Ceremonies for the evening, and he gladly accepted.

Anniversary medals: Progress on the medals has been limited. Medalcraft Mint will produce the 150 banquet medals, however a different vendor will probably be used to strike the official 100th Celebration medals.

Patron Sponsorship: Without any press coverage we already have 38 “Century Club” members. Patron donations are essential in making this a memorable event. It is hoped that many more people will be motivated to join the Century Club once press releases are issued.

2019 celebrations: January is the club’s 1200th meeting. Bill Burd has graciously offered to host a pre-meeting cocktail party from 5:30-7:00 in the same building as our meeting. There will be appetizers and a cash bar. Attendees will receive a special commemorative issue. Lyle Daly has put together a wonderful power point presentation that will play in the background throughout the evening.

Our April meeting at the C.S.N.S. convention will offer more commemorative issues. An Anniversary cake is also being considered.

A souvenir sheet is being discussed for the club’s Saturday meeting at the ANA convention in Rosemont.

Scott McGowan has prepared Press releases that will go out in early January, 2019 and is working on the Special edition of the Red Book with Whitman Publishing.

The next scheduled committee meeting is March 6, 2019. There will be sub-committee meetings on an as needed basis in between.

Respectfully Submitted,
Mark Wieclaw

CCC Hall of Fame

In honor of the centennial of the Chicago Coin Club and under the leadership of Robert Leonard, the club created a Hall of Fame to recognize some of the prominent numismatists among its ranks over the past century.

The hall is at www.chicagocoinclub.org/projects/hof/index.html and will be updated monthly. The first inductee is J. Henri Ripstra who, among his many contibutions to the club, is the creator of many of the early medals issued by our club.

Twelve inductees form the Inaugural Class, with one member announced each month during 2019. After the inaugural class of twelve has been named, the club’s board will develop the criteria for future membership, along with all of the other tasks in support of this endeavor.
