Sir: In reply to the resolution of the Senate of the 22d instant, upon the subject of the coinage, deposites for coinage, and expenses of the mint and branches, during the year 1838, I have the honor to enclose a statement prepared by the Register of the Treasury, showing the expenses, &c., of sustaining each establishment during that year.

The report of the director of the mint, communicated by the President to the Senate on the 18th ultimo, and to which I beg leave to refer, (Senate document No. 98,) contains, it is believed, all the other information asked for by the resolution.

Statement of the expense incurred in carrying on and in sustaining the mint and each branch for one year preceding the 1st day of January, 1839.
Mint of the United States:
