Universal Exhibit Awards

The following awards are made without regard to the category in which an exhibit is entered, and may be earned in addition to a category award.

Best-of-show Howland Wood Memorial
New exhibitor
Best exhibit by a person who has never before exhibited competitively at an ANA anniversary convention, and who is showing an exhibit that has never been placed by any other exhibitor. A YN exhibitor who has never won an ANA open award will be considered a new exhibitor.

Modern circulating commemorative coins
Best exhibit of circulating commemorative coins issued at face value within twenty years preceding the convention (example: 1978-1998).

People's choice
Most interesting exhibit as determined by a vote of those who viewed the exhibits at the convention. Both competitive and non-competitive exhibits are eligible for this award.

Open Division Classifications and Awards

Each competitive exhibit is placed in one class, to be judged against all other exhibits in that class. Here are the established classes, along with the name of the award for each class.

All United States coins and patterns and all coinage or trade tokens used in colonial America, except gold.

2 United States paper money
All paper money issued by the United States government, including military currency but excluding items covered by Class 6. Essays, proofs, and souvenir cards of paper money of this class may also be shown in this class.
Sidney W. Smith Memorial
3 Medals
Medallic items not used as a medium of exchange, or not having trade value.
Burton Saxton Memorial
4 Tokens
Items, including encased postage, issued unofficially as a medium of exchange for goods and services or for advertising purposes, but excluding American colonial items included in Class 1. Includes substances used in lieu of metal, other than paper.
B. P. Wright Memorial
5 Military medals, decorations, orders and badges
Includes the items stated, convention badges, and badges issued by fraternal orders or other organizations. Excluded are Masonic pennies, tokens, and non-badge type medals, and non-wearable medals commemorating military persons, places, or events that are included in other classes.
George Bauer Memorial
6 Obsolete paper money issued in the United States
Colonial and Continental currency, state and private bank notes, Confederate currency, and scrip.
William Donlon Memorial
7 Coins issued prior to 1500 A.D.
Coins, including gold, issued by any government before 1500 A.D.
Dr. Charles W. Crowe Memorial
8 Foreign coins issued 1500 A.D. and later
Coins, other than gold, issued 1500 A.D. or later by any foreign government.
John S. Davenport
9 Foreign paper money
Paper money of any kind, including scrip, issued in any foreign country.
Robert J. Leuver
10 U.S. gold coins
U.S. gold coins, including Carolina, Georgia, and western private issues.
Gaston DiBello Memorial
11 Foreign gold coins
All foreign gold coins.
Melvin and Leona Kohl Memorial
12 Latin American numismatics
All Latin American coins (including proclamations), patterns, paper money, tokens, medals, gold coins, and other numismatic material.
Henry Christensen Memorial
13 Canadian coins and currency
All Canadian coins, patterns, paper money, tokens, medals, gold coins, and other numismatic material.
John Jay Pittman, Sr.
14 General or specialized
Includes hobo nickels, wooden money, political buttons and insignia, and other numismatic material not covered in other classes or covered by more than one class (but see rule 15).
IPC Communications Services
15 Private mint issues since 1960
All numismatic material issued by a private mint of any country, including philatelic-numismatic covers, except that no denominated coins may be exhibited in this class.
Franklin Mint
16 Western Americana
All numismatic material issued in areas of the United States west of the Mississippi River (excluding Alaska and Hawaii).
William C. Henderson Memorial
17 Numismatic errors and error varieties
Any numismatic material misstruck or misprinted by the producer, including varieties caused by die or plate deterioration or damage. Items mutilated or altered after production are excluded.
Numismatic Error Collectors
18 Love tokens
Coins, tokens, or medals altered by removing the design on one or both sides and engraved on the altered side or sides.
Love Token Society
19 Local interest numismatic material
Any material relating to numismatics that is peculiar to or of special interest to the geographic area in which the exhibit is being presented.
American Numismatic Association
20 Issues of the Government of Israel
Coins, medals, tokens, and paper money issued by the government of Israel or by the Israel Government Coins and Medals Corporation, Ltd. from 1948 to date.
Menachem Chaim and Simcha Tova Mizel Memorial
21 Primitive, odd, and curious money
Media of exchange used in carrying out purchases and business transactions by primitive people and later by others as they progressed from barter to coins, or other items generally accepted as primitive or odd and curious currencies.

22 Numismatic literature
Printed and manuscript (published or unpublished) literature dealing with any numismatic subject.
Aaron Feldman Memorial
23 Casino chips and gaming tokens
Items of all types and materials used as gaming pieces, including traditional and non-traditional tokens and other money substitutes, and including tokens used in military clubs.
Archie A. Black
24 Elongated coins
Souvenirs created using an elongating machine, whether the underlying piece is a coin, token, medal, or blank planchet.

Young Numismatist Classifications and Awards

Young numismatists may place exhibits in any of the above classes; no special marking is applied to those exhibits - they compete on an equal footing for the above awards. However, some classes have an award for the best exhibit by a young numismatist. Here are the YN classes and awards.
